2. Features of Effective Professional Development

To be able to develop into a highly accomplished professional capable of juggling all of these variables in creating effective and engaging learning environments, the teaching professional needs to reflect on – and be committed to perfecting – his or her craft of teaching on an ongoing basis, continually seeking out opportunities to grow professionally.

For professional development to be effective in helping a teacher attain such professional growth, it must have the following characteristics:

  1. the professional development experience must be richly contextualized -- the teacher should experience how the approach modeled in the professional development plays out in authentic classroom settings;
  2. the professional development should prompt the teacher to reflect on – and work through an understanding of – the research base that provides the rationale for an approach to teaching; and
  3. there should be ample opportunities to apply the knowledge developed in the professional development to the teacher’s own classroom practice, using these opportunities to rethink and hone their own skills in teaching.
