1. Teaching Is An Art
Teaching is a very complex activity, requiring the understanding of the interaction of multiple factors and their impact on learning. To make effective instructional decisions—moment-by-moment, day-by-day, semester-by-semester—a teacher must consider all of the following factors and more. The teacher must:
- understand the central concepts and processes of the discipline to be taught;
- craft learning experiences that help students build these concepts and skills based on a knowledge of the students’ backgrounds and interests and their developmental levels;
- adapt instructional approaches to meet the diversity of student learning needs in the classroom;
- employ interpersonal awareness and skills to build active learning communities;
- be aware of and act upon relevant local and state standards for the school curriculum;
- use diverse, standards-based assessments; and
- appreciate and tap into the strengths of the cultures and communities from which his or her students hail.
